Tips for Maximizing Your Child's Music Lessons
a. Choose the Right Instrument
- When you listen to pop or rock music what do you focus on? The melody of a singer? The rhythm of the guitarist? The groove set by the bass player or the intricate details of the drummer? When you listen to classical music, what sounds do you like better? The melody and high pitches of the violins? The mellow, supporting role of the viola, the rich vocal like quality of the cellos, or the booming low notes of the string bass?
- When listening to a wind ensemble, marching band or 40’s big band, what draws you into the music? Is it the thundering percussion? The low sounds of the tubas and trombones? Do you like the lyrical middle sounds of the trumpets? Do the flutes take you to an ethereal place of beauty or do you prefer the rambunctious clarinets and alto saxophones?
- Let’s not forget the beautiful, versatile and one of the most popular instruments of all time, the piano. You have the best of both worlds, high and low sounds, melody and harmony and you can play just about any style of music!
- Is it possible to like more than one instrument? The answer is a resounding YES!
Age: The best age to start learning an instrument is dependent on the instrument choice. If you want to start your child in music at the age of 5-6 we recommend a foundational instrument such as piano or violin. At this age, children have some of the fine motor skills and attention span needed to begin playing one of the recommended instruments.
Skill Level: When starting any instrument, everyone’s skills are new to that instrument. Students will rise to the occasion if they enjoy the instrument so try something they seem interested in.
Group or Solo: If your child wants to play in a group setting, like a band or orchestra, you’ll want to find an instrument commonly used in those settings. If your child is interested in playing solo, like a singer-songwriter, you’ll want to find an instrument that allows them to express themselves without relying on others. Most instruments can be used in both a group setting and a solo setting.
Size: It’s important to find an instrument that is the right size for your child. Instruments such as stringed instruments come in different sizes to accommodate the learner. Other instruments such as woodwind and brass are one size.
Another consideration to keep in mind when selecting an instrument is to find one that complements your child’s learning style. If your child is more kinesthetic, you may want to consider an instrument that allows them to move around, like the drums, rather than a more stationary instrument, like the piano or violin.

b. Set Realistic Goals
When deciding to enroll your child in music lessons, it’s good to set realistic goals. Goals can include;
- Scheduling a consistent practice time.
- Deciding on the length of the practice time.
- Preparing your practice space with everything you need(pencil, instrument, music).
- Set milestones and reward yourself for what you have accomplished.
Children often have other obligations, such as schoolwork or sports practice. Remember to find a balance that allows them to have free time amongst all their other activities. Most importantly, don’t overschedule your child! Parents are notorious for saying yes to their children for everything they want to participate in. This creates a cycle of tired and frustrated parents and children.
If possible, parents should look into signing up for private lessons as well. This allows you the opportunity to learn together and share a wonderful experience along the way!
c. Enroll in classes that are engaging and fun
Lastly, it’s important to find an engaging teacher with a joyful approach to teaching. The perfect teacher will instill a love of learning. With this approach, your child will develop a love for all learning, which will contribute to their overall success.
